Hundreds gather for Aberdeen’s ‘Unity March’ in response to the ‘Far Right’

Around 300 individuals in Aberdeen gathered for a ‘Unity Rally’ to fight back against racism, in response to the recent ‘Far right’ Movements.

The march, organised by anti-racism organisation; ‘Stand up to Racism (SUTR), was held on the 18th of April in the centre of Aberdeen city.

Starting at Rubislaw terrace and ending at union terrace gardens, the march resulted in the temporary closure of Union Street, with police officers manning the road closure.

Though organised by the ‘Stand up to Racism’ group, the rally was supported from a vast collection of activists, faith organisations and students. Hundreds of people came to show support though the dreicht Aberdonian weather.

In support with the Unity march, The Palestinian Solidarity Campaign supporters carried a 100-foot-long Palestinian flag with them, whilst many others held flags and banners that related to their own causes.

Supporters could be heard playing music and shouting call and response chants through megaphones. It wasn’t just organisations who took part, both families and refugees marched within the rally, some even dressed in their own cultural attire.

Aberdeen was one of the 2 Scottish cities to hold an anti-racism Unity March that day, the other being Glasgow.

As stated on their Facebook page, a stand up to Racism spokesperson said: “A vibrant 300 strong anti-racist Unity March & Rally took place in Aberdeen today!”

“Very important show of unity from the community who are weary of the violent fascist protests and intimidation here of local far-right thugs Unite the Clans.

They claim to represent the ‘true’ voice of Aberdeen but could only muster a pathetic rump of 15 of their fascist goons today to counter us”

Whilst celebrating those who had shown support at the rally, organisers from SUTR, alleged that the march had been targeted by a far-right group ‘Unite the Clans’, and described those involved as ‘thugs’

“The thugs tried to attack the march full of families and refugees today but failed. Antiracists have reclaimed the streets and now need to keep up the campaign against the fascism, Reform UK and racism”

In line with the upcoming Holyrood elections in May, anti-racism campaigners are protesting for a different city, one that rejects racism and welcomes all refugees.
